Valentine’s Day is coming soon, just in time to remind us that love is worth celebrating.

I know, I know, I’ve heard all the stuff about it being a Hallmark Holiday and not based on any real religious significance. But I say so what? Who decided which holidays should be celebrated and why? I think love is a wonderful thing to celebrate any time, anywhere, and having a special day to honor romantic love is wonderful.

Besides it comes in February. In many parts of the world, it has been cold and gray and possibly snowing and raining for months. A holiday which celebrates with the color red just brightens up the air in the middle of a long dreary Winter.

Of course, we honor all kinds of love on Valentine’s Day, but I like to do something really special for my husband. Just us two, no one else. It’s a time to celebrate our marriage. Or your sweetheart if you’re not married….

It does not have to be expensive either. I once wrote “I love you” with a neon crayon on the ceiling among the neon stars in the bedroom. It was invisible until the lights went off and then lit up slowly. Cost: $1.49 for the neon crayon and less than an hour of my time. It melted his heart.

Or I make a little coupon and hide it where he will find it during the day…Some of the things I might put on the coupon might be the promise of making his favorite pie, or taking him to a movie he wants to see, or even something simple and wonderful, a massage. He can redeem when he wants:-)

Or I just surprise him with tickets to something I know he wants to do…

Or I plan a dinner with all his favorites… and turn on soft music and turn the lights down. You would be surprised how romanticizing the mood can change the overall feeling of the relationship.

One of my friends has to have received my all time favorite Valentine’s Day gift ever. His wife surprised him with a 5 day trip to Jamaica….she arranged everything, even his time away from work, behind his back with his boss. She just met him at the door with suitcases packed, nanny for the weekend already there, and tickets ready for the ride to the airport. Warm sand in the middle of the Connecticut Winter was Paradise and Romance all wrapped in one…now that was creative!

Simple ideas include downloading a few love songs for your love’s personal mp3, or a basket of chocolate, or flowers, or a balloon, or a teddy bear or even just a simple homemade card with a heart felt poem. There are many inexpensive, even free creative ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Of course there are some ways which are more costly, but I have listed sources for discounts for every single idea. And for all you men who waited till the last minute, there are even suggestions for last minute Valentine’s Day gifts.
